Are you Acting Tech Support for your family? Have you got a new computer in the house and are running into problems installing MSN Messenger for your chatty sibling? Behold the solution.
If you try to download and install Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) you currently go through this page and are asked to download WLInstall.exe. But you may receive an error message that says:
It looks like you're offline To install Windows Live programs, you must be online. Please connect to the internet, and then try again.
...even if you are online.
To get around this, download a slightly earlier version of MSN Messenger, for instance from Filehippo (choose a different version from the sidebar) or Oldapps - one of the 8-point-something versions should be fine. Install it, and then sign in as usual. Messenger will tell you that you need to update before you can sign in, and asks if you want to update now - say yes, and it will automatically update itself without needing to use WLInstall.exe, avoiding the annoying message.
(In return, internet, if you could tell me how to make my Users/Guy directory not read-only, that'd be great.)
